When it comes to health, teeth are often an overlooked aspect of people's daily health routine. I know you tell your dentist that you brush twice a day and floss and rinse daily but for the majority that just isn't true. So what can you do to keep your smile fresh and clean?

Food and Drink - The food and drink we consume is not only essential for our body and mind but it is just as important for the state of our mouth. Don't be tricked into believing that only wine and cola colored pop will stain your teeth. Any acidic or tannin-rich drinks or foods can cause teeth staining.

Electric vs. Manual toothbrush? When used correctly, both manual and electric toothbrushes can keep your mouth in tip-top shape. It is important to brush for at least 2 minutes twice a day. Remember to brush your tongue! Also, make sure you change your toothbrush every 2-4 months.

Toothbrush tips: 
1. Keep it rinsed - wash off your toothbrush after every use
2. Keep it dry - avoid toothbrush covers as this can create a moist environment where bacteria can grow and ensure your toothbrush dries before its next use
3. Keep it to yourself - no matter how close you are do not ever share toothbrushes; you should not even store your toothbrush next to someone else's brush as germs are spread whenever they touch

Too much acid can cause damage to your enamel - don't get me wrong, fruit and yogurt are great for your health but too much (or not enough flossing/brushing) can create an acidic environment in your mouth causing enamel to weaken. You can make your mouth more alkaline by drinking water,  eating calcium-rich foods and brushing your teeth. Also if you have heartburn it is important to treat this as the acid from your stomach can cause damage to your teeth. 

Floss everyday - it may seem like quite the hassle, but many dentists consider flossing to be more important than brushing! Often people have food traps between their teeth and the only way to make sure trapped food does not cause cavities is by flossing regularly. No matter how much you brush, there will always be some food stuck in between your teeth.

Get regular check-ups - you should see your dentist every 6 months for a teeth cleaning and a check-up.  

A healthy mouth will also increase the amount you smile. Smiling makes you happier, conveys confidence and can brighten up a stranger's day! If you find yourself wanting to cover up your smile, you could be holding yourself back in more ways than you realize. So go ahead and smile!
